Rye Grain SpawnTub™
This product has an injection port, so may be injected outside of a SAB as long as you’re careful. But to do it correctly and increase odds of success further – do it in a SAB (Still-air Box)
When grain is boiled, it loses excess amounts of nutrients to the water. This is the standard way of cooking grain.
But, there’s another way.
Through our experiments, we came up with a way to make spawn without losing all the nutes.
Here’s the process:
Wash grain, leave soaking for a length of time, drain and steep within in a hot water bath of dilute coffee and a good helping of gypsum.
Precisely measured and timed for consistent batches every time.
Sterile Rye Grain (Organic, coffee, added gypsum)
1000ml SpawnTub at 65% fill-level to accomodate G2G and shaking
Air exchange via HEPA-Filtered lid
Inject-thru lid (grey rubber port)
Using Gourmet Spore or Culture Syringe
Yes, a lot of our customers skip the SAB whenever they buy kits with injection port ported lids – but it’s bad practise and some will suffer contamination as a result.
SAB’s can be homemade or purchased from us – we offer a really good sized SAB with plenty of working space.
Wipe the rubber port and inject 2ml/cc around the SpawnTub™ (against the plastic wall) and finish with a little squirt in the middle.
Leave in a warm place to colonise at around 20C. Mycelium will usually start growing after just a few days to a week
Using Agar Wedge or G2G Transfers
You will absolutely need a SAB to have any success at Agar or G2G transfers. But a SAB won’t do anything for you if it’s dirty inside or your technique is rubbish or you’re in a dusty, drafty room. Practise and experience and thinking about how contaminants are transferred around is how to get good at working within a SAB.
We’ve had customers coming and saying to us; “I worked in a SAB but it still contaminated, your product is faulty”. A person could work in a cleanest Cleanroom in the world and still manage to contaminate everything in their path if they aren’t calculating every single move they make and thing that they touch. Experiencing contams is what makes people get better at technique. Our AgarPots come in packs of three because we want to triple the odds of success for customers.
If you want to practise transferring spawn to other spawn in a smaller scale, look for our G2G SpawnPots.
Remove the lid and drop a piece of colonised agar or pour already colonised grain you may have from another SpawnTub
Leave in a warm place to colonise at around 20C. Mycelium will usually start growing outwards in a day
Never try to inject through the pink filter.

Clean products are what we specialise in, it’s our bread and butter – and we’re good at it. We have to be.
Sterile technique is like driving – you can’t learn it by reading, you need to be practising it always.
While most contamination reports are statistically more likely to be down to beginner error, it’s not always the case.
Sometimes it may actually be us. Does that mean we don’t know what we are doing or that we’re rookies at this?
No. And here’s why.
We regularly purchase live gourmet mother spawn from one of, if not the largest, most accredited mycology business in the world.
This company is BIG and they even run week-long training courses in mycology and have the most incredible set up worth a fortune.
Even they make mistakes. We’ve had to get in touch with them a couple of times after receiving contaminated spawn.
The point we’re trying to make here is that even the masters of mycology mess up. Nature is unpredictable and we all make mistakes.
Although we don’t offer refunds on our products, we will send a voucher for it’s replacement.
Irregardless who is at fault.
A second chance on us 🙂
*If we believe this is being abused by anyone, we reserve the right to remove it at any time.
Although this grow kit can be used without a SAB, it’s good practise and recommended to use one.
We have SAB’s available, but you can always build yourself something – it doesn’t need to be fancy!
…some people even build SAB’s with a cardboard box (inferior but better than open air).
Preparing the syringe
Before using any syringe it’s best to thoroughly distribute the spores or culture within the syringe as best as you can.
A good way to dislodge spores stuck to the plastic syringe wall is to rattle off the corner of something solid whilst spinning the syringe around. Half a dozen times off a table will do the trick. Don’t slam it or you’ll break it.
An even better method is to use a sterile vial; inject into it then fill it back up again and voila – evenly distributed spores.
First impression counts
Nosey delivery drivers, flatmates, neighbours or work colleagues?
Your parcel will be sent in high quality, nondescript packaging; our website won’t be mentioned and there’s no tell-tale return address to worry about either.
Even for international orders made from outside of the UK, our customs declarations are barebones with descriptions such as ‘Microscopy Kit’ or ‘Gardening Supplies’, etc… We follow the rules whilst maintaining your privacy.
Planning to pay with Bank Transfer?
We will email you immediately after checkout, so be sure to read what it says.
Bank payments are what 90% of our customers use, we receive a lot of payments via bank and sometimes people do not appreciate that it’s impossible to know who has paid if you do not follow our instructions. Especially when many customers use names on their orders which don’t even match the names that bank transfers are coming from!
So, we created a better process for us to handle large volumes of bank transfers extremely efficiently.
Follow both simple steps for a happy, stress-free ordering experience at Cylocybe.
- Use your Order Number as the reference within your banking app.
Because it allows us to search for the payment in our bank. We literally type your order number in. Searching with names or amounts are completely useless. Order numbers are what we need.
- Then click on the ‘I Have Paid’ button within your account dashboard
It notifies us so we know to look for the payment you’ve sent. Think of it this way; if we get 500 orders in a day, but only 250 people actually follow through and send payment – that means that we’ve saved ourselves having to search our bank 250 times for payments that were never sent in the first place. The time savings for us are monumental which is handy when we are always rushed for time.
When we get a minute, we’ll verify the payment in our bank and start processing your order.

I wouldn’t recommend buying this product if you aren’t planning to use them till so far into the future that they dry out. It takes a verrry long time for grain to dry out.
Dry grain would only be good for the bin :)

You could just introduce this to fruiting conditions, but this one is really designed as a spawn tub only (to mix with a substrate or more more spawn).
If you are looking to just introduce to fruiting conditions after colonisation then I’d recommend opting for the Rye Grain MycoTub Grow Kit as not only has it got a much higher fill level of grain but it has a vermiculite casing layer too and all the other bits and bobs you’ll want to have (perlite, GrowTent etc)
Is this the same size as the special mycopot that you used to do?
Q Is this the same size as the special mycopot that you used to do? answer nowAsked on 15th February 2021 5:58 pmA These are more than three times bigger than the MycoPots as they were 280ml and these are nearer 900ml.
Are these pots reusable? I.e able to be properly sterliesed etc?
Q Are these pots reusable? I.e able to be properly sterliesed etc? answer nowAsked on 15th February 2021 2:17 pmA Yes, these are made of PP5 (polypropylene) plastic - safe to reuse within a pressure cooker. After a few uses the plastic will become degraded and also the injection ports will become cored from the needle punctures.
