A new generation ‘MonoTub’ product
If you have then you’ll know it’s how to turn grain spawn into a whole load of mushrooms!
We based our product idea on the well-known ‘Monotub Tek’, but made it simpler, cleaner, faster, modular and with less fuss. It trully is a game changer for anyone who has tried or wants to try their hands at monotub-style growing!
Excellent airflow and sized to fit our XL Grow Tent for easy mushroom fruiting.
SubBox™ has the perfect bulk substrate depth and fruiting area for achieving large harvests without the hassle.
200g of Organic Dry Coir within a HEPA-filtered SubBox™
Simple, effective and a better way for bulk mushroom growing, born during our Winter 2020 innovation break
Uniquely ours …as injection ported MycoPots/Boxes used to be till the copycat competition came along! (Ok, enough of our ranting..)
How to use?
Add 1 litre of water which will make the substrate expand to around 2 litres
With a corner of the lid raised to allow steam to vent, microwave for 5mins
Shake around (careful, hot!) and microwave for a final 5mins
Click lid fully down and allow to cool to room temperature (a plastic bag is ideal to keep it clean whilst cooling)
Remove lid then add 1 litre of spawn (2x SpawnTubs / 1KG SpawnBag worth)
Mix evenly with clean hands and cover the exposed grain at the top with some of the hydrated coir
Click lid down fully and leave to finish colonising in a warm area
Once 100% colonised with healthy white mycelium, move to fruiting chamber* and introduce fruiting conditions
*Or purchase one of our XL Mushroom Grow Tents to fit securely over the SubBox™, like the image below!
If you would prefer to use a very large fruiting chamber to have lots of SubBoxes in action, then you can calculate how many you need using the measurements below and how big the chamber is that you have. But as a reference, 6 of these will fit into the massive Ikea ‘Samla’ 130L plastic boxes! So you could have 6 different species of mushroom all growing in the same time – though be prepared for a lot of work harvesting your huge mushroom crops!

Clean products are what we specialise in, it’s our bread and butter – and we’re good at it. We have to be.
Sterile technique is like driving – you can’t learn it by reading, you need to be practising it always.
While most contamination reports are statistically more likely to be down to beginner error, it’s not always the case.
Sometimes it may actually be us. Does that mean we don’t know what we are doing or that we’re rookies at this?
No. And here’s why.
We regularly purchase live gourmet mother spawn from one of, if not the largest, most accredited mycology business in the world.
This company is BIG and they even run week-long training courses in mycology and have the most incredible set up worth a fortune.
Even they make mistakes. We’ve had to get in touch with them a couple of times after receiving contaminated spawn.
The point we’re trying to make here is that even the masters of mycology mess up. Nature is unpredictable and we all make mistakes.
Although we don’t offer refunds on our products, we will send a voucher for it’s replacement.
Irregardless who is at fault.
A second chance on us 🙂
*If we believe this is being abused by anyone, we reserve the right to remove it at any time.
Preparing the syringe
Before using any syringe it’s best to thoroughly distribute the spores or culture within the syringe as best as you can.
A good way to dislodge spores stuck to the plastic syringe wall is to rattle off the corner of something solid whilst spinning the syringe around. Half a dozen times off a table will do the trick. Don’t slam it or you’ll break it.
An even better method is to use a sterile vial; inject into it then fill it back up again and voila – evenly distributed spores.
First impression counts
Nosey delivery drivers, flatmates, neighbours or work colleagues?
Your parcel will be sent in high quality, nondescript packaging; our website won’t be mentioned and there’s no tell-tale return address to worry about either.
Even for international orders made from outside of the UK, our customs declarations are barebones with descriptions such as ‘Microscopy Kit’ or ‘Gardening Supplies’, etc… We follow the rules whilst maintaining your privacy.
Planning to pay with Bank Transfer?
We will email you immediately after checkout, so be sure to read what it says.
Bank payments are what 90% of our customers use, we receive a lot of payments via bank and sometimes people do not appreciate that it’s impossible to know who has paid if you do not follow our instructions. Especially when many customers use names on their orders which don’t even match the names that bank transfers are coming from!
So, we created a better process for us to handle large volumes of bank transfers extremely efficiently.
Follow both simple steps for a happy, stress-free ordering experience at Cylocybe.
- Use your Order Number as the reference within your banking app.
Because it allows us to search for the payment in our bank. We literally type your order number in. Searching with names or amounts are completely useless. Order numbers are what we need.
- Then click on the ‘I Have Paid’ button within your account dashboard
It notifies us so we know to look for the payment you’ve sent. Think of it this way; if we get 500 orders in a day, but only 250 people actually follow through and send payment – that means that we’ve saved ourselves having to search our bank 250 times for payments that were never sent in the first place. The time savings for us are monumental which is handy when we are always rushed for time.
When we get a minute, we’ll verify the payment in our bank and start processing your order.

You mention using a large plastic box to create a fruiting chamber. In that case, is it necessary to use perlite? Also, why is perlite not needed when using this 3.1L SubBox? Thanks.

If you decide to use this in a proper fruiting chamber then I’d recommend using perlite. If you don’t, there will be a lot more humidity lost from the mycelium brick due to the much larger volume of space inside the chamber.
When using a bag as a fruiting chamber, specifically the XL Grow Tent - it’s a perfect size for the cake and the humidity generated is ideal for the volume of space inside there.
I hope this makes sense. What I’m saying applies to this product only.
when you say to add a final layer of hydrated coir, does that mean after microwaving and cooling, that i should take some hydrated coir out for the casing layer before mixing the spawn in, other wise i wouldn't have any coir left for casing right ?
- if i dont want to use the bulkmix or want to save money, can i add gypsum and verm to the container before putting in the microwave, and if so, then how much ?
- but where can i purchase this box separately? i tried to search its up by typing 3.5L sub box, and nothing came up.
- hey, just wanted to ask, could i add gypsum, coffee grounds, and vermiculite to add more nutrients to the substrate ? so for example if i wanted to add all 3 of those ingredients i mentioned how much would you use ?

Adding coffee is a bad idea unless it’s being kept sterile fully sterile until full colonisation. Don’t mix coffee in with this.
If you really want, we provide BulkMix (search for it) which perfectly hydrated Coir, Verm and Gypsum. These tubs can be purchased individually and used with it.
Hi, i dont have a microwave, is there another way to sterelize the subbox?

Yes, you could place tin foil over the lid and steam sterilise in a large pot. You could also use a pressure cooker.
I only have 1 spawn tub on the go and just read that you advise using 2 tubs. Will I get away with using 1 this time around or should I get another tub ordered pronto?

Read more answer nowAsked on 19th March 2021 2:14 pmA Three options, one is to use half of the coir mix. Weigh out 100g and mix with 500ml of water. Option two is to do just what you said, you have a very high chance of it working just fine. Though not quite as high as option three. Option three is to order another SpawnTub, then shake about 10% of the colonised grain into it (within a SAB of course). It will colonise so fast your head will explode!
