70% isopropyl alcohol plus 2% chlorhexidine for fast and lasting cover
each wipe stays wet until you open it
dries without leaving grit on a port or blade
The short version
Each wipe carries 70% isopropyl alcohol with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate. The alcohol cleans fast and flashes off, while the chlorhexidine stays behind on the surface and keeps working, so one wipe gives you an immediate kill and some lasting cover.
You get a pack of 5 individually sealed sachets, each kept wet until you open it. Use one on the inoculation port of a bag, the lid of a jar, your scalpel, or your gloved hands before a transfer.
What it is
Alcohol plus chlorhexidine in one wipe
These are Clinell Alcohol Wipes: a non-woven cloth carrying 70% isopropyl alcohol and 2% chlorhexidine gluconate. The two work together. The alcohol gives a fast surface kill and dries clean, and the chlorhexidine leaves a thin residual film that carries on suppressing microbes after the alcohol has evaporated.
That is the point of the pairing. A plain alcohol wipe stops working the moment it dries. The chlorhexidine here keeps a little protection on the surface or your gloves for longer, which is useful in the seconds around an open transfer.
How to use it
Using a wipe when you inoculate
Clean the area first
Wipe down your work surface and let it dry before you start. Remove visible dirt first, as grime uses up the actives before they can work.
Wipe the port or lid
Open one sachet and wipe the self-healing port on a bag, or the lid and rim of a jar. Wipe firmly in one direction across the port rather than a quick dab.
Let it dry, then inject
Wait a few seconds for the alcohol to evaporate before you push the needle through. The chlorhexidine stays behind, so do not scrub it off early.
Wipe tools and gloves
Run a wipe over your scalpel and over gloved hands between transfers. For metal tools, let the alcohol dry fully before any flaming, and never wipe alcohol onto anything near a flame.
Storage and safety
It is alcohol, so treat it like alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol is highly flammable. Keep the sachets away from open flames, sparks and hot surfaces, and let any wiped surface dry fully before bringing a flame near. Keep the sachets sealed until use, since an opened wipe starts to dry out.
What it is not for
Where a wipe does not help
A wipe cleans the outside of a port, a lid or a tool. It does not sterilise grain or bulk substrate, which still needs proper heat sterilisation in a pressure cooker, and it will not rescue an already contaminated bag.
