The short version

The XL Mushroom Grow Tent is a free-standing fruiting chamber. It is the large enclosed space where colonised blocks, bags, jars or trays make their mushrooms.

It does not grow anything on its own. You run a humidifier and a fresh air fan inside it, hold the humidity high, and the tent keeps those conditions steady so your fungi pin and fruit instead of drying out or stalling.

What it is

A controlled room for fruiting

Growing gourmet mushrooms has two stages. First the substrate is colonised, when the mycelium spreads through it. That stage happens sealed up, away from open air. Then comes fruiting, when the colonised block is exposed to high humidity and fresh air and grows mushrooms. This tent is built for that second stage.

It is a fabric tent on a frame, with a reflective inner lining and a zipped front so you can reach the shelves. It traps moisture and holds steady conditions in one place, rather than trying to keep a whole room humid. Tighter control over a small volume usually means a better, more even crop.

This is the large size, built to take several shelves of blocks or trays at once. It suits a grower who has moved past a single kit and wants to fruit a few flushes together.

How to use it

Setting up and running the tent

1

Site and clean it

Stand the tent somewhere stable and easy to wipe down, on a tray or sheet to catch run-off water. Wipe the inside down before each run. A clean tent means fewer mould and bacteria problems while the mushrooms are exposed to open air.

2

Add a humidifier

Place an ultrasonic humidifier inside, or feed its mist in through one of the ports. Aim for roughly 85 to 95 percent relative humidity. Stand the humidifier on a raised base so it does not sit in pooled water, and keep mist off the caps, since wet caps invite bacterial blotch. A humidity controller with a sensor near the top shelf will switch the humidifier on and off to hold the range for you.

3

Add fresh air exchange

Fit a small fan to one of the ports to pull in fresh air and vent stale air. Mushrooms take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. Without air exchange the carbon dioxide builds up, which gives long thin stems, small caps and weak fruiting. Stale, still air also encourages mould and blotch, so keep the air moving gently rather than letting it sit.

4

Load colonised blocks

Put fully colonised blocks, bags or trays on the shelves, with space between them so air and mist reach every face. Open or cut them as your method requires. Give low indirect or LED light on a daily cycle, around twelve hours on. Most gourmet species use light as a cue for where and when to pin. They do not need bright light, as fungi do not photosynthesise.

5

Watch, harvest, reset

Keep the humidity up so caps do not crack or dry out, and harvest when the mushrooms are ready. Between runs, empty the tent, clean it and start again.

A tent on its own holds nothing steady. The humidity and fresh air come from the humidifier and fan you run inside it. Temperature comes from the room. Budget for those before you buy.

Different species want different temperatures, so the tent only holds humidity and air, not heat. High humidity is hard on metal and on standing water. Wipe the tent down between runs, dry it out, and watch for mould on the fabric or shelves. Capturing the exhaust air, or running a filter on the fan, helps keep spores out of your living space.

What it is not

Not for colonising, not a kit

This tent is for fruiting only. The colonising stage happens sealed away from open air, so do not use the tent for that. Exposing uncolonised or part-colonised substrate to the open, humid air inside a tent is asking for contamination.

It is also not a complete grow kit. The tent is the enclosure. You supply the humidifier, the fresh air fan, the controllers if you want them, and the substrate or blocks. Sold as the tent only.

Common questions

Frequently asked

No. The tent is the enclosure only. You add an ultrasonic humidifier and a fresh air exchange fan, and a controller if you want hands-off humidity.

No. Colonising is done sealed away from open air. The tent is only for fruiting colonised blocks, bags or trays.

Most gourmet mushrooms fruit well at roughly 85 to 95 percent relative humidity. Pins like the higher end, and you can ease off a little once caps form. The exact figure depends on the species.

Mushrooms give off carbon dioxide as they grow. Without fresh air it builds up and you get long thin stems and poor caps. Still, damp air also breeds mould and blotch. The fan clears both.

No. It holds humidity and air, not heat. Temperature comes from the room, so pick a spot that suits your species before you start.

Legal gourmet and culinary species such as oyster, lion's mane, shiitake and similar, from your own colonised substrate.

Wipe it down and dry it between runs, keep the humidifier out of standing water, watch for mould on the fabric and shelves, and filter or vent the exhaust to keep spores out of the room.

Questions and answers

Q

How does this differ to the mushroom substrate xl bag?

Anonymous · ·

A

It doesn’t - both are exactly the same product. I wondered when someone would finally ask that question :)

Q

Might be a silly one but can this be reused?

Anonymous · ·

A

Sure - give it a good wash, microwave for a minute or two and then allow it to dry. Should be good.

Nick Store team

Q

Can such a thing be re used?

Anonymous · ·

A

Absolutely, just make sure you give it a thorough clean. Maybe wash it then fold the bag and pop it in the microwave for a couple of minutes - then let it dry out.

Q

what are the dimensions of this tent - is it large enough to fit 2x 1kg grain bags comfortably / effectively?

Al B. · ·

A

Dimensions: 19.5" x 12.5"
It may be a tight squeeze, but yes it can be done with the current grain bag we have available. But it may not be possible with the new 1kg grain bag we are about to start selling soon which is wider.
