Cheers for that 2019 backlink, Vice!

The time we turned Vice down and they tried to get revenge on us!

Here's a blast from the past, after logging in to Bing Webmaster Tools... and looking at the backlinks to our .com !

So, back in 2019, Vice published an article called "How the UK Fell Back in Love with Magic Mushrooms". We're linked to in it.

Here's the line, word for word:

"They're in head shops, grow-your-own online shops (which circumvent the law by selling the mushroom kits and psilocybin spores separately)"

And guess whose shop they linked on those words? Ours.

We never wrote a blog post on this situation before, because we forgot about it. But here's actually quite a funny story to tell about it...

A couple of months before this article, we noticed an order coming in for a grow kit and spores addressed to head office of Vice in London (we've sent our kits to all sorts of unexpected places and people, and trust us - Vice is actually one of the least surprising!

Shortly after this, we had our first interview request from Vice. But, unfortunately we had to link them to our terms and faq pages regarding the legality of magic mushrooms because of their dumb questions which insinuated our products were sold with the intention of doing illegal things with them! The absolute shock of this!!!

Then there was silence for a couple of months.

Then they got back in touch, rewording their questions a little.. But not enough. So we responded the exact same way.

We must have really annoyed them, because a couple of weeks later and we got a beauty of a backlink from the above page directly saying we were circumventing the law! Cheeky bastards.

The only thing Cylocybe is guilty of was becoming the first shop to kickstart a completely dormant mushroom microscopy scene in the UK like absolute bosses and making a nifty grow kit (the Cylocybe Special MycoBox Grow Kit) which made the process easier than anything else out there.

Though we'll take a snarky backlink from Vice in their heyday over a full page spread in The Sun or The Mirror or whatever 😉
